For some people high school is a rough time but for others it is an adventure. Andy, Tommy, Brad and Shane are all teenagers having to deal with their own set of problems related to school life. The characters take turns speaking in first person about what’s happening in their lives and explain each action as they experience it.
Andy is a young actor hoping to achieve success in the future by mastering the art of acting. While attending the school drama club every Thursday he meets with Sheila, a beautiful young girl who also hopes to accomplish the same goal as Andy. The two of them become very close friends and this bothers Tommy, Sheila’s boyfriend. Tommy suspects it might be more than just friendship between them, so he forces her to leave the drama club. Sheila refuses to leave and after a very aggressive conversation, she dumps him. Tommy blames the whole thing on Andy and begins to hold a grudge against him. He tells Andy to show up at the park after school and fight because of what happened and Andy agrees to show up.
Andy shows up and sees Tommy and Tommy’s best friend. This becomes a handicap match so Andy gets beat down/embarrassed by the two of them while being surrounded by a crowd of people. Shane shows up from the mob of bystanders and claims to be Andy’s backup. Shane is the leader of the TMR gang, a terrorist group that creates problems in and around the school. Tommy and Brad are shocked and run off because they fear Shane just like everyone else. After they depart, Shane walks away and Andy is perplexed because why would Shane help him? The two of them have never conversed and Shane is usually one to create fights, not stop them.
Andy wants to audition for an action movie held by Young Talent .Inc so he calls them. He calls to confirm his audition and is given a role where his only line is “punk.” Andy auditions for the part and the agents really liked him because he had the look which really suited his character. He was auditioning as a street thug and was able to pull off the appearance after all the bruises from Tommy and Brad. Afterwards, another agent (Preston) calls Andy to tell him he looked good out there, but needs to work on his acting a little more.
Brad plays hockey for a rep team and is trained by his father to do better. He’s got speed, size, strength and agility which make him an excellent hockey player. Despite his multiple skills, he gets moved to the 4th line on his hockey team because he’s too aggressive and the refs have become stricter. It’s even more embarrassing that his spot’s taken by a girl. Meanwhile, Andy follows Shane because he wants to adapt to the role of a street thug so he could practice for his character in case he gets called back from the auditions. Tommy ends up going to a hospital where he gives a bouquet of flowers to his English teacher, Miss Pot. Everyone in the school thought Shane had pushed her down the stairs because she ratted on him once. In reality, Shane’s gang hurt Miss Pot because they thought she was influencing Shane to leave the gang and focus more on his school work. Eventually, Shane left the TMR gang and since then he has become a better person.
During hockey practice, Brad notices smoke coming out of the locker room. All of a sudden, a trail of fire seeps out and the players evacuate the hockey rink. Firefighters were able to take down the fire but not in time, the rink was finished. The fire started because the new girl had flammable products in her locker and a random flame ignited them. Police couldn’t trace how the fire had begun but they suspected Brad had something to do with it because he was still angry about being moved to the 4th line. The teams franchise was destroyed and the players were sent to other teams. Brad declined the offer because the season was almost finished and it wouldn’t be the same playing with another team and coach.
Being Brad’s best friend, Tommy felt he should’ve been the first to know that he was moved to the 4th line. Essentially Brad never wanted to tell him because he was embarrassed, but Tommy found out from Brad’s dad. Tommy felt like he’d been deceived so he wanted revenge. While conversing with Brad about the hockey situation, Tommy begins to brag about his future career as a military pilot and how Brad’s future will be nothing. Brad gets very annoyed and counters by lying to Tommy about an affair he had with Sheila. The two of them begin to throw fists and eventually, Tommy walks away. He goes to Sheila’s house to ask if she had an affair with Brad, she doesn’t answer his questions so in frustration Tommy rapes her. After the police found out, they put him in a youth detention centre.
One night, Shane sneaks into Andy’s room to have an important conversation. This is where the story unfolds and most of Andy’s questions are answered. Shane once had a younger brother and the two of them were very close to one another, but he was killed. Years back when Shane was currently leader of the TMR, gang fights were rough and Shane’s face was no mystery to other gangs. While Shane and his brother were inside a candy shop, a thug approached them and stabbed his brother. Andy reminds Shane of his younger brother because of their similar appearance. That’s why Shane backed up Andy in the fight and began a friendship with him. After explaining everything, Shane talks about how it’s his turn to take the hurt just like his brother did. He felt that if he had not been in a gang, his brother would still be alive. Andy lifts Shane’s blanket and see’s a knife piercing his stomach.
Unfortunately Shane dies because he had no fight left in him, he wanted to die. Andy on the other hand gets his part for the play and his agents are nuts about him, his future was set. Tommy on the other hand was to be kept in a Youth Detention Facility for two years and his dream of flying aircrafts had come to a shallow end. Brad kept his dream alive by continuing his hard work in hope of being a professional hockey player.
